India's Youth Crisis
India has the world’s largest youth population, yet millions of young people finish school without the skills, confidence, or opportunities to build the lives they dream of.
In underserved communities, the problem is even more acute. Financial constraints, lack of awareness, and social norms—especially for girls—create barriers that keep young people from reaching their potential.
Schools continue to focus narrowly on academics and exams, while neglecting life-readiness and career preparation. This leaves students confused, unprepared, and limited in their choices.
Key Challenges
Lack of Awareness
Students in Govt schools are aware about only 5-7 traditional career opportunites like Doctor, Teacher etc. And can’t ready themselves for diverse options
Social Norms & Gender Barriers
Marginalsed sections of society, especially girls face additional barries to continue their education post school. They find it difficult to travel and to make career choices freely
Financial Constraints
There is a lot of financial investment needed post school – in preperatory programs, course fee, admission fee, regular traveling, getting books and stationary etc. This becomes prohibitive for a large number of families
Opportunity
Govt is active in partnering, MoE has allocated $25 million for hiring. dedicated block level ARP for career guidance, NEP 2020 puts high priority on career guidance. Need to highlight alignemnet with SDGs.
- NEP 2020 focuses on career guidance
- School-to-workplace transition focus of SSA
- MoE 2023 guidelines allocating $250m each year to hire 8000 ARPs across the country
- Internship/apprenticeship incentives for industry to provide opportunities to youth
